Ciiantplonsliii) Tournament.

The championship tournament of 1899 is now a- matter of history. It was an unqualified success, and reached the conclusion without a hitch. There were, as usual, several surprises in tho result. Mr J. A. Boreham's position in tho prize list, for example, was never anticipated by any one. His somewhat inferior form was due chiefly to a worrying anxiety over a matter outside the game itself and which requires no mention here. But if Mr Boreham lost the championship, he gained esteem by the manner in which he received his reverses in the play. Mr Lucas, also, was further down the prize list than was expected. His form at the finish was a decided improvement on what he displayed at the commencement. Mr Souness, starting with a substantial lead, bade fair to come out near the top of the list, but failed to" maintain his advantage. On the other hand, Mr Gardiner, a- young man of 17 years of age, was the surprise of the tournament by the excellence of his play. He came up with a great dash at the finish, scoring wins off some of the strongest players in the contest. The scores of every player against every play-r are shown in the big table here given: — SCORE SHEET OF NEW ZEALAND

An analysis of the play is interesting, as shown in the following table: —

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Draughts Association was held at the- European Hotel last Friday evening, Mr Mulvey, of Gore, being in the chair. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year: — President, Mr A. Beck (Timaru) ; vice-presidents — Mesßrs W Fenwick (Dunedin), C. N. Clouson (Palmerston North), A. Raeside (Invei-careill), Thomas
