RIVERTON.

Our report of this meeting appeared in la.sfc week's issue. Tho attendance came up to expectations, and the tolalisator takings, amounting to £3937, represent £1721 more than the amount handled last year for the one

-day's meeting. Altogether the enterprise of the club in launching out a two days' meeting eeems to have been fairly warranted by the ! results. In the District Hack Race the old"| • grey Mußket led for half the distance, but ! icould not finish, and Doubtless (son of May TOng) won comfortably. The owner of Briny Breeze maintained that Doubtless had not been trained in the district, and was therefore ineligible ; but the stewards overruled the objection, returning the protest money. Old Jim Cotton piloted Waikaia to victory in the Maiden Hurdles, and handled his horse with good judgment. Backers made Hipponous i an odds-on chance for the Maiden Plate, thinking, of course, that Ellis's stable could not be beaten. As it happened, however, Hipponous was in trouble all -the way, the trace being a 'gift to Falcon (eon of Catesby) . The Maiden Steeplechase brought about a | fine finish between Redleap and Coreair, the farmer, ridden by Mr W. Saunders, winning with nothing to spare by half a length. Red- | leap (Hastings) ran second in this- Taoe to JTairy Queen last year. The Riverton Handicap found Jupiter and Seabreeze racing clean away from "the others, and condition enabled the St Clair gelding to win by a length, with something to spare. Ellis Bros, won this race last year with Decoy. Peter Siir.ple, -winner of the Open Steeplechase lai=t season, fell on this occasion. Seabreak, trained end ridden by F. M'Kay. led all the way, EJid won comfortably. The Flyinjr Handicap showed that Jupiter had been considerably underrated by the handicapper. Following the example of Decoy last season, he carried 71b penalty and won. Dilemma, for all his concession in regard to weight,, never bad a chance, and as Barmby lost his .•show through stumbling, Falcon was the one •to ohase Jupiter. Doubtless delayed his run t rather long in the Farmers' Plate, and got 1 befrten by Metz, Who claims Lorraine as sire. On the second day Lady Lorraine ran off in -the Hurdles, and Waikaia won as he liked by a couple of lengths. Mr Biggins, his owner, claimed the full stake, on the ground that Meridian, placed second, had missed one of the hurdles. The matter was to be settled late'- on. Seabreeze, always prominent in the 'Apurima Handicap, stalled off Dilemma rather easily at the finish. N The District Race went to the outsider of the party. Seadrift, who beat the more fancied Doubtless a couple of ; lengths. Cynosure and Peter Simple fell in I the Riverlon Steeplechase, and in an exciting I finish Seabreak beat Outram by a neck, all 1 out. Jupiter and Glenelg were given a dead 'heal for the Easter Handicap. The Southi land Times remarks that - " those in the press 'and stewards' box were of opinion that Glenelg won. The practice of permitting anyone else ! besides the judge in the box is certainly ob- • .jectionoble and liable to lead to unpleaFant , results." Doubtlegs had nothing to spare in ! his contest with the placed horses in the Hack I Eace. Tassy lost ground at -the start for the 1 Sborts, and this no doubt contributed to his defeat by Red Robin, in the Farewell Handicap Jupiter won easily, giving Waikaia 221b.
