A STRANGE CASE. WELLINGTON, April 10.
A case which at first presented only ordinary features -was before Mr Kenny, S.M., on Saturday morning, when Alex. M'Kechnie obtained a,n order for the custody of his two little girls, aged seven and nine, on the ground that they were neglected by the mother. It was suggested that he had been obliged to leave her on account of the woman's intemperate habits, and to go to South Africa, where he prospered, and had now come back for his children. The woman's friends, however, intervened, and, after hearing them further, an order was made late at night to prevent the removal of the children. On her side it was alleged that M'Kechnie had deserted her for years, and only sent £5. She had supported the children with the help of the Charitable Aid Board, and had worked hard for nine years. The charges against her were alleged to be fabrications. The children were actually on board the Mokoia ready to leave for Sydney, having been taken from the convent, where the mother placed them, by the police. Further proceedings will follow, and probably an information will be laid against the father.
