LOVE: AN OASIS IN THE DESERT OF LIFE.
A calm, quiefc spot in a world of strife, An angel which visits both rich and poor, Laving its gifts at the humblest door — Gifts far more precious that silver or gold i To those whose hearts have ne'er gone cold. j Love is a spirit not born of earth, ! That is welcomed by all to the home and ' hearth ; A spirit so fair that its praises are sung By matrons and maidens, old men and young. Love is a voice that sounds sweet and clear I Through the gloom of affliction, trouble, and < j fear, Bidding us rest from the turmoil and strife, And turn for awhile to the bright side of life. Love is as music, wandering and free, Wafting its melodies o'er land and sea; Love is a force when it rages, and yet Inirns In the heart of a man who its good uses turn To hatred and jealousy, driving him mad, When he buries good feelings and goes to the bad. But be it not my lot to harbour in my breast Such love as this, which brings disquiet and I unrest ; But rather let me shelter that pure and holy 1 love That alone can find acceptance with the angelic host above. jj.
