SOUTHLAND GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET.
! (From Our Own Correspondent.) Ia t VERCAE(tJ.LL, August 21. The wheat market continues quiet in Sou hland, and no change in prices can bo quoted. One line of about 250 sacks of prime Tuscin was bought by a local miller at 4s, sacks in, f.0.b., country siding. This would represent a little better than 4s 2d in the mill, and is tli3 only sale I have heard of for the week. Sm 11 parcels of seed wheat are bringing from 4s Gd to 4s 9d. The estimated stocks of wheat held m Southland total between 45,000 and 4G,000 sac ;s. T am also unable to quote any appreciable change in the oat market this week, notwithstanding that shiimients have been fairly heavy. There are still a few small lines coming forward, but, although the general tone aas considerably improved, no difference in pric3S is to be noticed save for the superior classes of feed. Quotations: A, 2s 5d per bushel; B, 2s id; C, 2a 3d; D, 2s 2d, free on board, sacks m Statistics lately compiled show that stocks are much lighter at the moment than they were this time last year. The total quantity available m Southland, including what still remains in farmers' hands, is estimated at 218,600 sac^s. Meantime holders are not at all disposed to consider offers below tho rates above quoted. Shipments during the week have been: — Wellington, 3079 sacks ; Auckland, 2235 sacks ; Ble.iheim, 150 sacks; Napier, 50 sacks; Gisborao, 50 sacks; Melbourne, 230 sacks; Fremantle, 1400 sacks. The grass seed market is quieter, and prices have eased somewhat since last report. There are plenty of samples of prime chaff offering, and sellers are asking £3 5s — more •than buyers care to £,ive. Sales at £2 15s to £3 are reported. . Potatoes, owing to a largo shipment by the s.s. Wakatipu from the Bluff yesterday for Melbourne, are expected to rise. At present they are worth about £6 15s per ton, while onions are very scarce. Flour is quoted at £12; oatmeal, £13"; pollard, £4; and bran, £3 2s.
