Problem competition.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, — I see by this -week's issue that I have not pleased everyone! It was not possible to do so in any case, but I think I can vindicate myself! "When I started analysing the positions 1 found that nearly all, wore in very unnatural settings, and noted a lot of them to that effect. I found as I went on that there ■were only a few positions in the lot that could possibly claim natural position, others were too simple altogether to deserve a prize. I had therefore to give first place to what I thought w-is the best stroke. — I am, etc. Gore, August 19. J. Httlvey. j TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I was somewhat amused to read tho two letters which appeared in your column la it ! week. See-ing that the problems in"question ! are nrne, I do not like to take up the mattor of their merits or -demerits ; but there is one ; thing in Mr Lucas's letter which I will refer to. He says the first prize problem is no problem at all. Well, Mr Lucas ought to know bettor. He ia surely not so ignorant of what a stroke problem is. Perhaps he, being so good an authority, will tell your readers what is tha standaid or rule by which stroke problems are made and judged, and what is or is not a, draughts problem. We can then debate the question with your permiss on. Thanking him in anticipation, — I am, &c., D. A. Bkodie. P.S. — " In a Fog " will have the mist cleared away when he appends his naine-^D. A. B.
