Mr Baird in Reply.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — In justice to myself please allow me to make the following reply to Mr D. A. Brodie in connection with my Game 2798. I was not in the least aware of the publication of similar play My game contains two corrections of note (d), var. 1, Game 2773, of Mr B. F. Sivetts, U.S.A., which was published in your issue of April 7. As my game was not published until Juno 9, I cannot understand why Mr Brodie did not, in the meantime "point out" or claim the play of Mr Sivetts in his var. 1 up to the second move of its note (d), at which my first correction is made, because that play is a continuation oT my vars. 1 and 2, with their notes, and particularly becaiise Mr Sivetts gave 21 — 17 (the first move in his var. 1) '" as an improvement on published play," which opens up my line of play, and consequently that of Mr Brodie. His statement, dated June 30, is rather misleading, for he writes "that it [my game] was published in the witness in 1894 by me as a game played between Mr W. F. Sim and myself," "a,nd we gave the play contained in Mr Baird's variations 1 and 2, and notes F, g, h, i, and k." Does Mr Brodie mean that he published my trunk game as well, for it is my game proper, and which contains the correction of importance to me? If Mr Brodie will favour me with a copy of the stated published play by letter addressed to me, Post Office, Parramatta, N.S.W., I will be' grateful to him. — I am, etc., August 9. Eobert Baibd.
