UNIVERSITY DEBATING SOCIETY.
The first meeting of the University Debating Society for the second term of the present session was held in the chemistry lecture room last Fric'ar. There was a moderate attendance" Befoie the ordinary business of the meeting was pioceeded with, the Chairman (Profcssoi Gihay) leferred in feeliug terms to the loss the univeisity, and especially the Debating Society, had suffered in the death of Mr C. M. Mouat, B.A , LL I), lie said that the late Mr Mouat had been a i.io&t popular student, and that he had never ceased to take an active interest iv the life of the university On the motion of Piofessor Gilrav. seconded Ly Wr J Collie, 11. A,, who warmly supported the sentiment expic:sed by the mover, a minute was recorded expiessing the Debating Society's deep i egret at Mr Mouat'a death and its appreciation of the practical assistance it had received from him The prize e-s?ay for the year on "The Disadvantages of a Univeisity Education," hy Miss Udith L Brown, was tastefully read by Miss A. B.iucbop, 8.A.,, sn<\ was well leceived Piofessor Gihay read a lengthy leport on the essays he had received, and offered some kindly criticism on the views held by the writers. He said that the prize easav was a very interest'
iag one, admirably reasoned out and well expressed, and thoroughly deserving of the prize. During the evening musical itenu were rendered by Miss A. Biuchop, B. A., (piano solo), Mi- G. Harty (violin solo), aud Mi- R. N. Adams (song). All the performers were loudly applauded. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting*
