THE CANTERBURY TROTTING CLUB.
Otago owners bad no luck at the Grand National meetinp:, but a good stake at. tbe Canterbury Trotting Club's gathering came south, Mr Gerkins's American-bred stallion •Lauderdale succeeding in tho High-cJats Handicap, wherein he won on the fast pace of smin 7sec for the two miJes. Few who saw this horse win his first race at Tahuna Park and suffer defeat on his second attempt, at the same meeting thought he would ever attain to such high rank as he now lakes. He bad a go in the Free-for-AU, and tben won the race abovo referred to. Jii* trainer must have effected a tremendou= improvement in the borae. I observe, too, that Harry Sneaker shaped very weD at tha meeting. He also is ovidontly much improved, being now possessed of a. lot of pace. The meeting' seems to have been a successful ono in every respect, thero being capita) racing and excellent, management. The stewards .were evidently determined to enforce the rules. As an example, in the last vaco Jessie and Monte Carlo were both ruled out for starting too early, and the race was awarded to Murmur, who finished third. A few Jessona of this sort, administered impartially, .will soon teach riders and drivers to obey the starter
