August 15.— Tho only result so far of the Eoad" Board's application for further police protection is tho stationing of a mounted in stead of the usual foob constable at Anderson : s Bay There &cems just a touch of absurdity along with an injustice to the Peninsula in supposing that one man stationed at the extreme limit of the county can ook after its intore3t 3 efficiently. The county has » pop«'&tion, pretty openly scattered, of close on rfOOO During the summer months it exceeds that number. Tho same population in a town would probably havo a sergeant and two or three constables stationed in it. Query— why At the pres3nt tiino thero is a real necessity for a resident representative of the law, who should ba somewhere about the centre of u\s county. . , Amusement3.-The young fellows m tin neighbourhood havo staited a gymnastic clu>>. holding meetings twice a week at the school The fokball clubs at Portobello and Otakr:* had a friendly contest on Saturday week in Mr North's paddock, the result being a redded win for tho first-named club, the Pivots all petting home vithout tho ambulance.— X he Steadfast Lodge 1.0. G.T., Portobollo, was rosuacitated a few nights sinco after a sleep of r.cme years. About 20 members , mostly young people, joined, with a prospect of increasing members. Improvements.- The widening of the beach road is t.ow in picgress, and when finished it will bo >\ great improvement. A rew houss for Mr Dawson, jeweller, Dunedin, is just abocu completed, near the jetty. Mr Benme has a number of small sections laid off :or sale on his property. Tho Seison.— Although tho weather is anything but inviting, vi?itor<J are already arriv"^oultry.— Most of the settlers here keep poultry, somj in considerable numbers, of common breeds or no breed at all, and so we are much interested in a new neighbour who has started a poultry farm with pure breeds aad an incubator •' sitting" on 200 eggs at a time.
