Capetown, August 3.

The election campaign is progressing. Mr Cecil Rhodes, in the course of a speech, said that the Dutch were with them in this election. He was fighting to maintain the Queen's supremacy in South Africa, and added : "Mr Hofmeyer, leader of the Afrikander Bund, declares that my death is the only solution of the difficulty. This is quite true ; and if a fanatic executes his thoughts, Hofmeyer will be slobbering at my funeral." Mr Rhodes said that he did not intend to be removed from public life except by death. August 4. Proceedings in connection with the general election at Cape Colony are of an acrimonious character. President Kruger denies that he is supporting the Dutch candidates with the secret service money of the Transvaal. August 5. Much acrimony continues to be displayed ,in the Cape Colony elections. Mr Cecil Rhodes is conducting a brilliant fighting •.campaign. Sir Gordon Sprigg has been >eturncd unopposed, August 7. -. Mr Cecil Rhodes, in the course of an election speech, said that the best solution t. of the difficulties in South Africa would be for him to meet President Kruger and com1 pare notes. This, however, was impossible. One-eighteenth of the number of Kruger's ' burghers, he added, had settled in Kho- ' desia. If President Kruger did not look out Rhodesia ■would soon have half his burghers. August 8. Mr Cecil Rhodes considers that unrest must continue until the new people in the Transvaal are granted the same privileges as the old. Union can only rest upon equality. j
