August 8. — Sluicing throughout the district is at a complete standstill, although the great amount of frozen snow lying in tho gullies piomi3Os well for a*n abundant water supply as soon as the frost breaks up. Both the reefs have a few men employed m them bringing up the dci-d work, so that crushing can be proceeded with as soon as the weather is favourable, and in both cases good seasons are anticipated.

The Weather, Etc— The winter has been a very long and ligorous one, and I am not surprised that the editor or the Tua.peka Times in his articlo on tho Central railway pities the poor unfortunates who are compelled to pasi their time in this '" inhospitable region," Central Otago.
