MINING.
August 8. — Sluicing throughout the district is at a complete standstill, although the great amount of frozen snow lying in tho gullies piomi3Os well for a*n abundant water supply as soon as the frost breaks up. Both the reefs have a few men employed m them bringing up the dci-d work, so that crushing can be proceeded with as soon as the weather is favourable, and in both cases good seasons are anticipated.
The Weather, Etc— The winter has been a very long and ligorous one, and I am not surprised that the editor or the Tua.peka Times in his articlo on tho Central railway pities the poor unfortunates who are compelled to pasi their time in this '" inhospitable region," Central Otago. We certainly can't grow very heavy crops, but the king of metals i 3 &o plentiful that we hp-vo no trouble in sending ont (for the necessaries of life, notwithstanding that potatoes m one case at least have sold for £1 2s 6d per sack ; but these wero grown locally, which might account for the high value- put on them. Football.— Our local team of footballers visited Clyde on Saturday last to try conclusions with the Clyde team, the result being a drawn game, each team ocoring 3 points. " Concert. — An effort 13 being made to get up a conceit hero iv aid of the iuncls ol thii Punstan Hospital, and seeing the matter is in the hands of the ladies there is little doubt of its buccess.
