A GALLANT RESCUE.

Gisbohne, May 31.'

Further particulars of the accident at the Gisborne breakwater yesterday show that a most gallant rescue w«s made by the harbourmaster and the crew who volunteered to go to the rescue with hira. The sea, that was running was tremendous, and threatened time after time to engulf the pilot boat ; but the crew persevered in their search, despite the fact that the water filled the boat to the thwarts and it threatened any moment to be completely swamped, Whea young Thomson was picked up it was noarly an hour after fee had been awept off the brexkwater. He was clinging to a piece.of timber, and was being carried across the bay at a spot wheto the waves were breaking heaviest. Having picked his son up, the harbourmaster saw ifc was impossible to head- back under shelter of the breakwater, and decided to rua the boat ashore, which he successfully accomplished through several chains of angry surf. About Bix -months ago young, Thomson saved" his father's life, when he and several ethers were swamped in the river. On another occasion be was the means of saving four lives off the bar. A movement is on foot to fittingly recognise the pluck of the boat's craw which went to the re«cne.
