NORTH OTAGO EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

On Saturday a very large meeting of the teachers in the Oamaru district was held in the

Athenaeum to consider the advisability of forming a branch of the Otago Educatioaal Institute. Mr J. Lindsay was voted to the chair, and introduced the business of the meeting, pointing out the necessity of the teachers of the district being united. He also intimated that the committee of management had sent up ft deputation consisting of Mr Garrow, president of the institute, and Mr Eudey, secretary. Ib had been arranged for Mr Davidson to be one of the deputation, but owing to illness in his family he had been unable to visit Oamaru. Mr Garrow and Mr Eudey then addressed the meeting, the former dealing with the work of the Otago Educational Institute during the year, and the necessity for union among theteachers of the province, and the latter with the teachers' position under the Incorporation and Court of Appeal Act and his relation to the legal defence fund of the New Zealand Educational Institute. After a short discussion, it was proposed by Mr G. Morris and seconded by Mr G. Macdonald— " That a branch of the Otago Educational Institute be formed in the Oamaru district." Tho motion was carried unanimously, and the following office-bearers were appointed : — President, Mr G. Macdonald ; secretary, Miss Cooke ; treasurer, Mr W. Macdonald ; and a committee consisting of Miss King, and Messrs Flamank, Bastings, and Moir. The meeting was most enthusiastic throughout-, and about 25 at once handed. in their names as members ; but this number will be considerably increased by the addition of several who had written promising to support the institute, but had been unable to attend. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to tta deputation, who expressed their thanks for the hearty reception they had received at the hands of ths teachers of the district.
