UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the University Counoil was held yesterday, and attended by Messrs E. B. Cargill (vice-chancellor), G. G. Russell, D. R. White, Professor Shand, Professor Sale, De Hockeo, and Dr Burnt.

The Finance Committee reported that accounts amounting to £1930 ' 7s 8d had been passed for payment. The bank book showed ft credit balance of £2448 7s 4d. A copy of the agreement with Professor Benham was received from the Agent-general, and found to be in order. The matter of run 79c wav in the hands of the solicitor; The registrar was authorised to pay £4 as the Stuart prize. — The report was adopted. -

The Secretary' cf the Students' Association wrote asking if the council would give theic sanction to the capping ceremony being held ia one of the halls of the city ; and also, in the event; of the council giving their sanction, would they honour the executive of the association by giving their patronage to the ceremony. He stated further that the council might rcsb assured that no personalities would be allowed with regard to members of the council.

After considerable discussion it was resolved that, if any change be made, the ceremony of handing diplomas to graduates be held in the University Library as heretofore, and that the students be at liberty to hold a meeting afterw*xda at any place ihoy think fit.

A vote of thanks was accorded to Messrs J. S. Tennant and W. Mawson for the way in which they bad carried oat the biology classes uetil the arrival of Professor Benham.

Sir Robert Stout; wrote tendering his. resignation as a member of, the council, ar business engagements prevented him from attending the council's meetings. — It was resolved, on the motion of Professor Sale — "That the council accept with regret the resignation of Sir Robert Stout, and trust that he will afford to Victoria College, Wellington, the same valuable assistance and support which he has always given to this university."
