THE PHILIPPINES REVOLT.
«. Thubsday. Island, April 16. Eastern files show that the- Philippine! revolt has broken out in a worse form thai ever. The China Mail says that the Spanish" authorities find it even more difficult to scotch this rising' than the last. The present leaders, it is feared, will neither show mercy nor practise that consideration for property which characterised the former rising, nor is it expected that they will discriminate between the Spaniards and other foreigners. When General Dastella bought over the rebels he congratulated himself upon ending the rebellion, but it waß one thing to bribe 30 leaders and another to encompass the complete pacification of the Philippines. The market price of rebels has gone up, and so long as there is a prospect of purchase so long will rebels be forthcoming. Since General Dastella's departure large bands" of rebels have been overrunning the provinces, and wherever they have appeared rnin and rapine have been recorded. They have been animated by a desire to pillage and destroy in order to induce the peaceable natives to throw over their present Spanish domination ; but reports as to engagements are conflicting owing to the censorship over the telegraph messages and press and telegraph staffs.
