THE '98 CENTENARY.

A meeting to consider what steps ahould, ba taken to celebrate the centenary of '98 was held in the Lower Choral Hall on Thursday evening, and was well attended.

Bishop Veedon presided," and in iLe courao of some remarks referred to the movement which had been on foot for some time to adequately celebrate the centenary. The Irishmen of New' Zealand, he said, were deeply attached to the land of 'their adoption, and were anxious to forward ila interests. They were proud of: their grand country, and would alwaya be faithful to its laws. At the same time they were not wanting in their attachment to the land of their birth. They looked with pride to the old land, and to what their fathers had dorm there, but those sentiments did nob prevent their being attached and being proud of tha land to which they had come. In doing what they could to celebrate the centenary of 1795 they would act in such a way as to avcid giving offence to any section of the comaauaity of Daned'.n. He was glad to say that they were thoroughly united, and thaf: the local movement would be carried out with great harmony »s well as with moderation.

A discussion then ensued sa to the means that should be adopted to fittingly celebrate the movement, and it was decided that it should take tha form of a conversazione. The following were appointed a Gsneral Committee. — Bishop Verdon, the clergy of Dunedin and South Dunedin, Messrs J. Armstrong, A. R. Barclay, O. S. Reeves, J. A. Scott, P. Nolan, J. Lißton, J. O'Connor, D, O'Mahoacy, C. Fisher, J. Curroll, J. Sheridan, M. Mulquinn, L. Clancy, J. O'Neill, T. M'Cortnack, and J. Marlow. Mr J. O'Connor was appointed honorary secretary. The Bishop was appointed chairman of committee, and Messrs A. R. Barclay and C. Fisher vice-chairmen.

A meeting of the committee was subsequently held, Mr Barclay presiding. Snb-committees were appointed to deal with various preliminary matters, and it was agreed thai the General Committee should meet next Wednesday evening.
