I - — The plague of locusts in Natal has been successfully fought by means of an arsenical preparation mixed with treacle or sugar. The tracks are sprinkled with the mixture, and bits ! of maize stalks, &3., are dipped in it, wh<n the locusts are tempted and perish. No injury to cattle or poultry is reported. — A short time ago, while some men were engaged in sawing up a Californian giant tree, they found in a hollow place in the centre of the trunk a nest, a few eggs, and the .mouldering remains of a bird. Experts say that the nest had been there^quite 200 years, and that the poor bird which had taken up quarters in the hole was imprisoned by a sudden flow of 1 thiot *a» over the entrance to tho aperture.
