First Day—Monday, December 27.
Tho first-day of the Auckland Racing Club's Summer meeting was held at Ellerslie course this afternoon. The weather was fine, with a cool southerly breeze, and the attendance waa about 10,000. The track was somewhat hard. Conqueror Bcored an easy victory iv the Great Northern Foal Strikes, tho public recoguising a good thing by backing the winner heavily. The Cop favourite; St. P*ul, succumbed to tha lighlly-fancied Aotares, who came at the favourite below the Derby stand and, after a desperate struggle, snatched a half-length victory. The amount put through the totalisatoc in £1 tickets was £12,734. The following are the results :—: — TRIAL HANDICAP, Of lOOsovs. Seven furlongs. 329 -Mr E. J. At the bottom stretch Nestor was showing the way, and was jnst in front of W»iukn as they ran into the cutting, and was retaining a »-liglst advantage to the straight, where St. Paul's colours showed to the front.- Jijsfc below the Derby stand Antares come .at the favourite, and Waiuku died away. At the cutting Waiorongomai drew on terms with Poraugi Potae, and SwordOsh improved his position. WaioroDgomai and St. Ciispin were together at the home turn, but before they entered well into the straight Swordfieh had taken command, eventually winning by a length and a-half. Time, lmin 44sec.
