THE ENGINEERS' STRIKE.
London, September 22.
Mr John Burns has made a statement to the effect that the employers are willing to consent to a conference on the matters in dispute with the engineers.
September 26.
Tne Federation of Employers in the engineering trade declares that its policy with regard to the demands of the workmen remains unaltered.
September 27.
Thirty thousand pounds was distributed as strike pay on. Saturday amongst 24,500 engineers, 15,000 allied workers, 8500 nonunionists, and 11,000 labourers.
Wellington, September 27.
The local members of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers have received a circular from the secretary of the council for Australasia calling attention to a cable message received from the Loudon office as follows :—": — " Lock-out ; general help urgently nesded ; please Jevy members." In response to this, the council hss directed that a vote be taken at once on the question of making s levy of 2i per week per member, the levy to remain in force as long as may be required, provided that a further vote be taken every three months.
A well-attended meeting of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, &c , was held on Monday night in the Club Room to cousiderthe strike in England. It was agreed to remit in the meantime the sum of £120 to assist the society at Home in its struggle for the eight-hour day, and also ta requeht all trades unions in Dunedin to raise subscriptions for tho same object.
