THIS COMING SEASON.

[Contributed ]

Another fishing season is near at hand, and now is the time to see that ihe rods are in goid crder aud the tackle relinb'e. Should the weather be seasonable &t the beginning of October good ba<-k»t a should be obtained in all the old favourite streams, and the trout will be fouud in forward condition on account of the fine open winter we have bad. If no more suow falls tbU season the snow-fed rivers will be in good trim somewhat earlier, as there ii not much s; ow lying in the back country at present. Ono of the best fishing district?, and one that; Jaas been very little fi-hed hi' her to, is between Lowborn and Hawea Lake. The upper reaches of. tbe Clutha are full of good troufc, and are always finhable except in big fl ods, and the water is free from digger*' tai'ings. Magnificent trcut are to be got io. the Hawea River, »nd in Hnwea Lake they are to be found up to 25ib. ,'J he trout iv th«e water* are probabiy tbe best iv the whole district, their fl*sh being of a fine pink colour, and the edible qualities are of the beat.

The Lindis is another fine river, well stocked with good trout. Any experienced angler giving the district a fair trial should make some rf cord basket*. A trout weighing 15' b was caught in the Hawea Lake last March with the rod, which goes to prove that the trout can be taken by anglers. It will be a great pity if the Acclimatisation Society ever allow netting on this five lake, and it is for anglers to prove that the speckled beauties in its waters can be caught with rod and lice. The trout can be seen rising in the lake to the natural flies as early as August.

Another bit; of good fishing ground which has not been very much fished hitherto is on the lower reaches of the Pomahaka. Anglers can now make sure of comfortab'e quarters while there at Mr Maxwell's farmhouse.
