University v. Caversham
In this matoh, played at Tahuna Park, Caversham by winning the toss secured the advantage of having both the wind and the sun at their backs. From the kick-off the 'Varsity forwards by fast following up penned their opponents in the corner until wild passing by Armstrong allowed them to relieve the pressure. Speculating on the part of O'Shea allowed the Caversham forwards to carry the b*ll into their opponents' twanty-nve, where it remained for some tima*. Splendid passing by the Blue baoks transferred the ball to the opposite goal line, where J. G. Macdcmald through failing to take a pass spoilt an almost certain score. The Cavarsham bscks retaliated with a passing rush, which was nipped in ths bud by Gregg, who, cutting off a pa**, sent the ball to M'Ara, from whom it went to Macdonald, O'Shea, and Fell, tha laafc-named making the run of tho day, but having tho misfortune to be thrown iuto touch at the corner flag. During the remainder of the spell Caversham had much the better of the game. From a free kick Olsen had a shot ab goal, the ball, however, striking the post. Later on the same player kicked a splendid goal from a mark. Ou resuming play O'Shea had a " pot" at goal, bui this usually aafe kick did not gat the ball to rise. From a free kick J B. Macdonald safely piloted tho ball over the bar. This caused the 'Varsity to liven up, and during the last 10 minutes both Fell and J. B. Macdonald scored tries, neither o? whioh was enhanced.
