SHOOTING.
On Saturday afternoon the Engineers fired the first of & series of competitions for the silver challenge cups presented by Hallenstein Bros, and Mr J. Hislop. - The conditions were seven shots at 200, 500, and 600 yards. The members turned out in strong force, but tho bright light prevented anything like gcod shooting being done. The highest scorers were :— '
The Engineers' Match Committee met on Saturday and selected the following teams to fire against the East Taieri Rifles on Saturday next : — Against East Taieri First, at Pelichet Bay — Lieutenant Barclay, Sergeants Biubon, Bryant, and Beadle, Corporals Tonbh), Lacey, Thomson, Midgley, Engineers Patersou and Miles; emergenny, Engineer Potcw. Against E&st Taieri Becoml, at MosgicJ — Sergeant Russell, Corporate Eagle and Edmondp, Lancecorporals Wells and Spence, Bugler Ure, Engineers Stycb, Hay, Wurr, Dredge, Rodger, Fairbairn. The Portobello Rifle Club held the sixth and final competition for prizes presented to the club on Saturday. The day was very hot, wind and light very puzzling. Ranges — 300, 500, and 600 yards ; seven shots at each distance. The excitement was keen on the result of the final contest, the three highest scorers running very close eince the second competition. The following are the scores from 70 and upwards :—: — Mr Wm. Geavy 82, Mr J. P. M'Cartney 79, Major M'Cartney 74, Mr Ryan 73, Mr James Dickson 72, Mr R. C. ICerr 72, Mr J. Duckmouton 71, Mr Alex. Dickson 70. AGGREGATES.
*Prize-takers. Mr J. P. M'Cartncy and Major M'Cartney's total scores are 469 and 467. Mr J. P. M'Cartney takes Mr Shaw's cup, Major M'Cartney Messrs Edraond and Co.'s prize and money, Mr Geary Dr Cunuinghame's prize, Mr Uuckmanton Mr James Graen'B. Mr W. Clearwater, fourth competition (aggregates excluded), 70, Messrs B-own, Kwiug, and Co.'s prize ; fifth competition, Mr James Dickson, 81, Messrs Laidlaw and Gray's prize ; sixth competition, Mr P. Ryan, 73, Mr Hislop's prize. It was 3.15 a.m. on Saturday before the result of the polling in Christchurch was Announced*
