1 A Tribute to Memory. fi.s on a field of battle won Beside his sword a soldier dies— !i c fighting o'er, the,rest begun— v Be hold our brother lies. JSo despot king'he knew, nor hailed He tyrant flag ; but, biave and far Upon Life's ocean vast he sailed, Steered by a restless star. Yet he of many climes and parts, Of southern frosts or northern flowere. Fain, for the honour it imparts, Would call his country ours. Careless are they who waste the spring To mow the daisies under feet, thinking that now where blossoms cling Shall be forever sweet.' ■Tis not till cruel winter's snow Has stripped its beauty from the tree Xhat grieving mortals learn to know The price that daisies be. Tis ever thus ! "Wo view the day More denrly through the evening's gloom ; Fonder we prize the spirit's clay When weeping by its tomb. Waipori, November 1896. J. M.
