WAIKAIA.
July 14. —Heavy rain fell in the low-lying district during Friday and Saturday, 4th <in9t., with snow on the hills and mountains. Had there been no snow there would have been a greater loss of property in the Mataura Plains tliaa ha? resulted. As a matter of fact the river only rose to a level with its.banks, and overflowed in a few places. Little damage wa3 done to property in the Waikaia district. A bridge wad washedaway on the right bank of the river over a culvert from Happy Valley, and the roads require repair more or less.
Court Day.— At the Warden's Court on the 7th inst. many local applications were considered. Angus M'Kinnon and P. R. Clarke, being granted a water race from Cameron's Bush to Burnt Bush Gully ; T. Rea and E. Radfotd, extended claim of two acres at Winding Cteak ; A. Kennedy, water rice at Winding Creek ; W. H. nail, water race from Dome Burn ; T. Taylor and R. T. Stewart, dam at Sheepwaßh Creek Gorge, Wendon ; R. T. Stewart, water race ou Winding Creek, 10 years ; T. Taylor and R. T. Stewart, water race from Hinhie Creek, Glenary, fur 15 yeara ; W. and R. M Ivor, water race from Pig Alley, Winding Creek, to Landslip ; T. Taylor and R. T. Stewart, j water race from Whitcombe to Piano Flat ; F. I M'Rei and F. M'Kenzle, extended claim, of two acres on Muddy Terraces ; ' S. Northcoat and -8. Golie, water race and dam -at Landslip. D. and E. Batoson's application to bring water race granted in 1863 under the act of 1891 was approved. Joseph Wallis and J. Williams applied for a water race from Gow"s Creek to Happy Valley. This was objected to by Mr A. R. Robson, lessee of Run 327 a, and a num- ' ber of settlers on the School Commissioners' land, through which it was proposed to cut the race. The application was adjourned to ascertain if the run and the School Commissioners' lands were under the Mining Act. ■ A. M'lvor and patty applied for 30 acres at Land -Up ;A. Delanry ana George Slattor, for 25 acres,- and both applications were adjourned for survey and repoit. The following were granted subject to approval of the Minister for Mints :-A, M'Arthur. 30 acres on
