Country Sjilcs.— Donald Reid and Co. held their usual monthly horae fair and stock sale at the Taieri saleyards, All&nton, on Tuesday, the 7th instant. There was a fair entry of htock, all classes being represented. There was a large turn out of farmers and dealers, and for any suitable lots offered there was fair competition. Most of the horses entered were of the, light cla?s, and for this Eort there was little or no demand. T*heie were buyers for sound, active, young draughts and .also for spring carters, but any of these sorts offered were aged and did not evoke much compatition. Cattle were in mode?t request and met a fair sale. Sheep were in good demand, and under moderate competition all the sheep entered were sold at fair values. Crossbred wctaers sold at 10s 6d to 10s'8d ; .crossbred ewes' iv lamb sold at 78 2d ; lambs (small) sold at 4s 6d each ; heifers cold at £3 to £3 15s ; calves sold at 163 each ; draught hones (aged) sold at £8 10 j to £11 10s. The Nkw Zeala*«d Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) report having held a clearing sale for Mr John Brown at his farm, Waipahi, on Thursday, 2nd inst , owing to the expiry of his lease. Considering the weather there was a very full attendance of buyers, and on Mr Brown assuring that all the stock, implements, $c. were to go to the highest bidder those present displayed a considerable amount of eagerness in competing, eveiything efL-red being bid up for to its uppeimost value, prices aU through being in favour of the vendor. At th«j Crown yards, IJalclutha, on Friday, 3rd inst., th u y held their regular fortnightly auction sale, but owing to the inclemency of the weather the attendance wa3 somewhat smaller than on most occasion*. Tho entries' were not very numerous, either. The few lots 1 offered, hewever, were well competed for. They sold 45jsteer3 .in one line at £7 17s fid, and a few lots of sheep at full rate?.

Rabbitskins.— The supply is considerably below what was arriving at this time last year, consequently the weekly offerings are smaller. There is the usual attendance of buyers at the sales, however, who compete keenly for all descriptions. Winter blacks sell at 14Jd to 15Jd ; best winter grey, 12Jd to 12Jd; autumn, 6d to 9d ; summer, dd to s£d ; suckerg,.2d to 3d per lb. Sheepskins.— All" the buyers attended the sales on Tuesday at the Chamber of Commerce, and a brisk demand was experienced for all classes of skins. Bidding was very spirited, and "prices were, if anything, in favour of sellers. Green crossbreds sold at 3s to Ms Od ; do merinos, 2s to 2s 7d : dry crossbreds, 2s to 4s Id ; do merinos, 13 3d to 3s 7d ; palts,.4d to is 2d. Wool.— f he London sales opened on the Ist inst. with only a moderate attendance of buyers. Competition for crossbreds was spirited and prices unchanged sine* the close of last series, but merinos Bhow a decline. 'Cables received dated July 4 report — " Lustrous crossbwds show an occasional advance. Other sorts are unchauged " ; while -under date of July 6 cables' advise that bidding is quiet and prices irregular, and many lots have been withdrawn. In the local market there is next to nothing -doing. Hides.— Thete is a rather better demand, and all coming forward have a ready sule at— For prime h^avy, 2Jd to 3id ; meliura to gcod do, 2d to 2Jd ; light, JJrl to lfcl ; inferior, ljd to ljd per lb. Tallow.— The market is scantily supplied, and local buyers continue to take up all consignments at .quotations, which are— For prime rendered, 17s to 18s ; medium, 143 to 16s ; inferior, 12s to 13s 6d ; rough fat, 8s 6d to 12s. Grain. -Wheat: Millers' prescat requirements are small, and in consequence there is not much business passing. Any lines of prime velvet receive most attention, but Tuscan and red wheats are not strongly inquired for Fowl feed is fairy plentiful, and cannot be d.-»alt within very large quantities. Quotations ate: J'rime mi'ltng (velvet), 3s 9d to 3s lid^ piime Tuscan, 3s 6d to 3s 9d ; medium sorts, 3s 3d to 3s 5d ; fowl feed, 3a to 3s 3d per bushel (sacks in). Oat* : During last week the market was at its quietest, and sales only effected with great difficulty. A better tone ia apparent to-day, and nearly all lines of good to prime feed are readily saleable at quotations : Seed and special line*, 1« lOd to 2s ; good to, best short feed, Is BJd to Is 9Jd ; medium, Is 7Jd to Is 8d; inferior, Is Cd to Is 7d per bushelXsacksextw^. Potatos3.— A steady supply has come forward both from the north and south. As yet no export trade has been done, and consequently no sales of large linos can be reported Quotations : Best northern Derwents, £Z 15s to £2 1 7s fid ; medium, £2 10a to £2 12-j 6i ; bost kidneys, £-2 103 to £3 per ton (6Rcks in).

Chaff. — A. pood demand exists for really prime chaff, and a'l lines of thia class an be readily placed at quotations. Medium light and indifforently cut samples are- fairly plentiful, and do not receive the s>afne attention. Best oaten sheaf sells at £2 15* to £2 179 6d ; medium to good, £2 10s to £2 12* 61 per ton (bags extra). Turnips — The market continues to be well supplied with good Swoies, and quotations are unchanged— viz., 11b to 12s per ton (loose).

The entries snowed considerable improvement, and the sale wai one of the most successful that has been held for some time, nearly everythins being placed under the hammer at satisfactory prices, bheep sold at 7s 6d to 7« 9J, lambs to lls 2d, cows to £7 2s 6J, bullocks to £5, pigs (slips) at 9s.
