THE RUGBY GAME.
In the match between the Kaikorai and University. Clubs, whioh was played on the B'shopscourt ground on Saturday, Duncan won the toss for the former, and played for the firit spell from the-south end.' For the open ing quarto. of an boor tbe visitor* held their
opponents very well, but then a rebound when the ball was kicked by a University baok against an opponent gave an opening to the Kaikorai, and Dunoan utilised it, scoring a try, which Woodi did not convert. A few minutes afterwards a free kiok to the 'Varsity in the Kaikorai 25 was takea by O'Shea, who dropped at goal, the ball failing, however, outside the posts. Too nexb incident was that O'Neill dribbled over the home team's line, bat he • lost the bull, and with it the honour of breaking the spell of good fortune which gives the Kaikorai immunity from adverse scores by means of tries. The home team again attacked, M'Laren taking the ball to the University line and Torrance scDring. King did not enhance the try, and at halt- time the Kaikorai had onlj 6 point 3in hand. In the seoond spell, passing speedily let Armit in, but Murphy failed with the kick. Davis was the next to 'score, stealing across the University line from the back of a ecrum closa to it, and King otfnverted. Further tries were gained in quick succession by Duuo&n and Davis, neither being improved. Await was the nexb to score, an appeal on the ground of obstruction, which seemed to be justified, not being entortained, and the same player shoitly afterwards added another try, and on each of there latter occasions. Murphy placed a goal. This concluded the scoring, and the final result therefore was : Kuikori ... 30 points University... N ... Nil The match between the Dunedin and Ziugari- Richmond Clubs resulted in a victory for the former. Shortly »fter the match commenced Mason cut off a pass and transferred to Stohr, who passed'fo Stephenson, the latter scoring near the corner fUg after a .good run. Stohr failed with the kick. A fine bit of passing between Pollock, Johnslone, and "Ma9ou subfceq'iejtly resulted in the latter getting over the Zmgari lines. Mason, however, failed to convert. A splendid dribbling ruth by Stophenson, Williams, Johnstone, and Siae ended in the last-mentioned invading the opposition lines, and Mason kicked a goal from near the twenty-fife flag. Zingari were only once nearly scoring during the spell. Upon that occasion (he forwards got on a good dribbling rush, and when about 20jd*of the goal line Pollock took apjtkiek. at goal, the ball striking the goal post. During tbe earlier portion of the eeoond spell the play wa« very uninteresting, consisting of a great deal of corum work in the centre of the field. But both tides waimei up to the game subsequently, and Zingari nearly scored on two or three occasions. 'No score, however, wab acfcually made on either side till near the conclusion of* the spell, when Stohr potted a goal for Dunedin. In the second spell, from a sorum in front of the posts Snvta got tbe ball, and after some difficulty got across the line. The try wts nos converted. Subsequently Minn charged the opposing full .baok while he was evidently debating in his mind whether he would kick or run, and, securing the ball, touched down near the pusts. M'Lennan succeeded in placing a very fine goal. The score" at the end of the game thus stood : Union ... 8 points Alhambra Nil The match between the Caversham and Pirates took place at St, Clair Park be c ore a fair attendance of onlookers, The play was fairly interesting a!; the start. After a fruitless attempt by La wry to kick it' goal for Caver sham from a mark, a capital piece of passing by the Pirates' backs gained considerable ground, and Martin, finally taking the bill from Priest, scored, Priast k ! cking a goal. The Caver sham representatives were kept mostly ob the defensive, Lawry being conspicuous in saving his side on more than one occasion. Caversham then assumed th« aggressive. Several marks obtained by Caversham players, however, proved unproductive. In the second spell the G*vorah*ra backs adopted their opponents' game of passing, and the play became fast and interesting. Priest was the next to score, and shortly afterwards Sband, who had put in some fine work, pasted to Matheson, who also got over the line. The Caveraham players then invaded their opponents' quarters, and Lawry had a fine opportunity of placing a goal from a free kick, but failed.
