Notes from Lawrence. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
Lawrencu, May 6. Mining matters still occupy a good deal of attention. Matthews and party, Tuapek* Flat, have commencsd the building of their new dredge. The Comishmen in Munro'a Gully are reported to have had overtures mate to them by a foreign syndicate to purchase their rights, which are well known to be valuable ones. 1 have beeu informed on go. id authority that there is every probability of their accepting the offer. 1, for one, hopo it is not so, as they have a gooii thing on for -many years to come, aud they may have some trouble iv finding as good or safa an investment for their purcliase money. Generally speakiug moat of the mining ventures round the di*triot are doing pretty well, and if the Government would only do something in the way of erecting dams and reservoirs for the conservation of water for tho use of the miners a great quantity of ground would be worked which is now lying unproductive. Politics. —ln politics nothing is doing. The elections are still too far off, but I have been rather surprised at the number of people one meets who express themselves as of opinion that some of ths members of the present Go^ernmtnt and a good many of their supporters will be defeated at the general election.
