UNIVERSITY DEBATING SOCIETY.

The usual meeting of the University Debating Society was held on Friday night at the university. Mr C. M Mouat was in the chair, and the hall was well filled. The programme consisted of a p ; anoforte duet, excellently played by the Missea Bauchvp, aud a debate on the adoption by the Otago University of an academic dre-s The leaders of the debate were : On the affirmative side, Messrs O'Shea and'Hutton and on the negative side, Messrs Bertram and Hilgend'.rf. B.A. The subject wss then opened fot general di-.cus-sion, and speeches were made by Messrs Thomson, 8.A., Wilkinson, M A , Haggitt, I L.B, Mathc.vs, Adams, and C. K. Smith. iVlr Thomson's ipeech was especially goid, its point and humour b^ing much appreciated by the audience. After Messis Bertram and O'Shea had replied, the Chairman addressed the meeting on the" subject aw\ then put the quc-tion, that " It is desirable that an academic dress be adopted?" to the vote, whpn the negative side was found to be in the majority. The debate was unusually long and very interesting, besides being very animated and to the point. After a vote of thanks to the chair, the meeting terminated. It wa3 intimated during the evening that all insinbera of the society who had not yet received a syllabus could obtain one on application to tho secretary.'
