The late Mr E. T. Gillon.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,— ln your notice of the early portion of the journals tic career of Mr GHlon you nave inadvertently fallen into error : Mr Gillon was never editor of the Bruce Herald 1 , hut was the editor of the Bruce- Independent in 1866-7, while the writer edited" the Herald from 1 1868 to 1869. The Brace Herald was almost the only paper in Otago that supported the claims of the late James Macandrew* in his contest) with Mr Thomas- Dick for the Snperintendency, and the Independ«nt { with Mr Qillon opposed him with bitter animosity. Ar- Mr Mftcand'rew was a great and unusual favourite with the southern settlera, this opposition- was relented, ' apd the Independent, which was starter) as the' settler*' paper in opposition to the Herald, lost their sympathy ami support, and tue Herald- for a time was prosperom-and useful; Mr J. E. Gillies subsequently was editor of the Brace Herald, and he, as well as I many others" now alive, can corroborate my statement, of fact. The error may be of littta I consequence to the public, but errors such as tho^e should not too confirmed. I will b« ! obliged" by your publication of this correction.-* i I ant, ko. t 1 O»m*ro, April 21,, J. Cjtubcs,
