COURSING.

FtXTUttBS. June 3, 4, s— National 0.0. 's meeting. June 8, 9, 10— Waterloo Cup meeting. August 5, 6, 7 — National C.O.s meeting. CHALLENGE STAKES MEETING. Fzbst Day — Wjbduhsday. The coorsiug Mason of 1896 and the existence of the National Couraiug Club of New Ze*i;vnd, as a body promoting coursing meetings, were alike inaugurated yesterday, when the club's opening flrtare was commenced on the Plumpton at the Forbury racecourse. The weather was bleak and miserable, although the rain that more fraquently than otherwise spoils the pleasure of spectators at looal coursing gatherings wag fortunately absent. It was a long day at the course, across which a south-weaterly wind blew with nipping koeuneas, and even without the discomfort of rain there was no one present who was not glad when at 4.46 p.m. the- last cour«e was decided. The day's card consisted of the first round of the Challenge Stakes, embracing 35 courses, and the proceedings were lengthened by the fact thftt there were numerous uudecided courses A further came of delay consi*t«d in the fact that frequently during the proceedings stray hares cropped up within the enclosure, and their expulsion was necessary before **thesport could be continued. Wh-ther it -was. owing to their boing affected by the colder nob is, of course, an arguable point, but itj it undeniable that a great luaoy weak ham were coucatd dutii g tbe day, the proof of thii being provided in fche faefc that there was * whjlcoale slaughter, ovar 20 hares being killed. In the majority of the courges the exchanges were not bo evenly divided as to leave any room for doubt as to the result, bat there were other trials which required careful watching, and in some of these— and especially in tha caso of two or threa of the undecided cour»cs — tor M'Auloj's judgment gained the complete approbation of the b*»t authorities among tbe spectators, liiere were a few oases in which the judge's decisions did not generally commend themselves, bub it is always to be reme.obered that no person on the ground occupies '«o good a position for judging as does fhe official who is cbaiged with that (.peoial duty. In a few instxucf s fchero were com^aiats matte of cureless - slipping, and, while tht;re Was no sog^atiou against Mr 3 W Heud«r»on, who has control of the slips, being other than perfectly fair in his intentions, it is only right that publicity should be given to the fact that there are owners who Were disappointed. The foHovring are the details of the day's coursing : — CHALLENGE STAKES. Duckwlng led Whisky a couple of lengths, and the latter was merely a spectator throughout the coarse, faflin* to score a point. Discard was the

faster of Hi« next pair, «nd, leading b^thrtl length*, had a little in hand when Cuohla killed in the middle of the field. Locket had ths pac« pf Tompest, and besides leading up by threa lengths had all the best of a poor course, In which neither slut showed good form. Torpedo II beat Deceit for pace, and scored the bulk of th&puinta in a trial which was anded by a mutual kill. Aecot Ird Ellington eight or ten length*, arid, working smartly, won easily. Dart led Caribou half a doeen lenrtbs.and did all the ecorinr a? flnt but the latter, working closely, had equaltaed matters when he killed, an undecided being signalled. Before being picked up Caribou conned a vagrant hare. On the pair befna slipped again Dart led up by a few l w"}f bSl V$ ha( l thß beßt ot the "changes. Wallace led up from Lynn Regis and the ej& chaiiffes In a longish trial left him sttll in credife both- dogs soorlng well. Bryan O'Lynn led Belt bird -three lengths, and though the »lut got in alm^^t immediately for a few points, the formei on resuming poaaes'ion maintained control until the escapes -were. reached, and won handsomely. Nigh tin jalo- raced past Nancy Hanks and led to tho hare, but the Jatto killed after smart work, and an undecided-was the reault. la the run oil Nightingale led Nancy .Hanks, and beat her pointless in an uniuterestiug trUL Port Fairy turned round as soon as released jfrora the slips and obstinately refuted, as though unsiahted ta ' participate in the trial with Mare. Of Doris and Tahatik* the former was the hater, though it wak a diapnted point on the atand whether she got tha first turu, and she was also the -marter worker. Prefix led My Lady three or four length*, and thi Utter had not done enough to win when Pieflx dashed m and killed. '* J., V. led Merganser, aftei ?.?}°. Christmas Rose led Cora Lynn a couple of lengths, but the slyt was the much better worker, ami' had won cattily whan Christmin Ko*« killed Skipu«r beat Drummer without difficulty in "a course in which there was very little work. Bloomer raced' clean avray from Victoria and .straightway killed a weak hare. Stanley led up by less than a length, and though he worked indifferently won ea»ily, Com Lynn describing wide circles out*idethe winner. Barnum, with an advantage from the, slip, led up and had the best of a course in which both dog* ran very wide of the hare. Carbina .led up from Trefoil, and showing good working powers ran up ■ fair icore before th* latter got In, whU* the subsequent 1 exchanges did not affect the result. Sail Home led for th* greater pare of the rua-un, but Gipiy Grund rushed in at the finish and got the turn, aal had all throuxh, up te his' kill an advantage in the working. Luck's All let] up by" half a dozen lengths, and ran up a fair -com before Lord Montague got in, but the lat'or was unable before the escapes were reached to wipe off Lock's AH total. Bl ctctborn race<l past Reliance^ ani by dint of cloae york, ran up aucVi a score in the early stag- a of 'he trial that it was int(<oisible for Reliance, under ordinary circuni>ta«c«w, te win ; and as the latter, when be did get posses* sion, was unable to retain it, tk« black and white dog won handxomely. Nightlock was faster than 1 Laundry M*id, and killed almost iinm-n lately after tb> turn. Feather was at .first unsighted, but af ci she had j >ined in, Shylock, working very neatly, had «H the beat of a fcrUl whirk'termiuated in a kill to Feather. The betting on Shylock w»s 6to 1. Flying Jib and Harveß'er ranah undecided, the former being the. smaller v and tb« latter the fatter of the two. The Fiend just'boat Hasty Girl in the race-up, »nd th« latter then fell, but on har joining in the course again she put in some good work— not sufficient, howcv«r, to enable her to win, Castorina beat RadiAnt easily for pace, and after two turns killed A course betweer^Faster and Faster- and Myrtle, in which the former seemed to have the advntage, was given as undecided In the run-off. Fa«t<r *nd Faster ju*t sot the first turn, and killing after Myrtle had wrencned, woa somewhat lHckily.> Lillie Langtry had superior pare, and scored" everything in her meeting with Point to Point. Scqu-tb led Bessie Macartby, and a lucky kill to, him, immediately after the turn, gave him the course. Kingdom easily beat Blackwood for pace, and the issue wai never in doubt. ■>
