WAITAKI.
April 28. —^The weather during the past few weeks has been ci>t.sirierably mixed vaiying'from betwitif all to> very cold.
Mr Hiall-Jonbs at Oamabu.— The Hon. Mb Hall- Jones addressed a public, meeting: under the auspices of the Workers' Union in the Theatre KoyaF on t&e night of April 23. There was- not a very large attendance, The' ben. gentleman was, however, very well received, and appeared to<mestr witk tha approval of those present Hia Worship, the Mayor occtrpiedythe chair, and various members of tRo Workers Union occupied seats on the platform. Mr Hall-Jones- expressed pleasure- at addressing an Oamaru audience, and reviewed at -length the various labour acts passed last session, and also enumerated others under consideration, for aext session. He also defended the action of the Government re banking- legislation of last year, and paid 1 a very high compliment to* the Hon. Mr Ward for the precautions he had taken to avert a ca 1 amity. In conclusion, he thought in their present member they had a good, henest representative, and he took this opportunity, of publicly thankiDg him for past favours. The Son. gentleman resumed bis seat amidst applause. Mr Duncan intimated that he would address the electors- a week or two before going to Wellington ; but he might explain that he was not a labour candidate, but a general representative who did the best he could for all classes. Mr Brown moved a he»rly vote of thanks te the Hon. Mr Ball-Jones, and' of confidence f» the Ministry Seconded by Mb Ln me&en, and carried 1 . A Vote of thanks to th* may or for presiding, concluded.the, meeting Ihb AitDGOWXN Estatb.— Considerable interest has been taken in this land during the past few tlaysy especially so- since the maps', <fee', have been on, view<. They are tituck up in various, parts of the town,, and at all times around such places qjnte a number are collected, a few pointing out tor others not >o well informed the choice portions. From remarks]? hear I feel certain that, were tfea estate* three times the size;, every acre- would he taken, up.. I drove around the outskirts of the property to-day, and waa so pledged with what I saw that you need notbe surprised if "your own" is 1 amongst the applicants on May 12. Racbs. — The p»ces just over were very quiet,' financially and otherwise. Obituary. —Since my last two deaths haye occuned here. Mn Terence Kodgenr, an old reside t and much respected, leaves a husband and family to> moucn th<-ir Toss. The victim, of the late accident, Mr M'Kay, was well knowa here as a hard-working and industrious man. He leaves x wife and family, who have the sympathy of this district witfi them 1 in their bereavement.
