TAIERI FERRY.
April 20.— A very pleasant afternoon' was spentr on. Saturday la*t in' the Taieri Ferry SchoolboußOi by * large gathering of ladies and)gentleme&, who had come together at the invitation of Miss<HalL to 1 hear- specimens-- of the playiug and Binding- of; her pupilß. A» Miss Hall ha» pupils in th*. Otakia, €fanley, Healeyj Taierf Fferry, and Waihola districts! and parent* and friends from all these districts- were preient,it can> be easily' understood', that tne little- schoolroom war well filled with an interested audience,, which, seeingthat the ! entertainment was in tbe afternoon, consisted chiefly- of ladies. To show that even' in, one quarter Miss Hall can make good' pupils,Master Arthur (Henley) gave accurate rendering* of " The minßtrel boy, 1 " and Andante by Wickins. The same composer's "In happy moments " and " Huntsman's cllowa " were well played by Mi*s B. Sinclair, Titri ;-Mis» P: Anderson (Otakia) gave Gatb/s song-, " Rothe-ay B^ in a manner that showed careful tuition, while, her younger sister rendered" S«hum.»nn's ' Merry' peasant " ' most pi aeantly. Miss Anderson * " Tarantella" was' also very sweetly given ™<"f«' Sifted young sisters also shone- in several' difficult vets on the oiaao. Miss Wall's playing of " Dee
Frefschutz" wa<J well done, as was also Mi«s Lucy Lamont a '' Grand- march." The latter youog lady's rendering of Haydn's " tlormaid'a song was very pleaang.^ud augurs well for the future of her vocal powers &lus Mary P> aitie played Inaccurate time and touch Taylor's "Take hack the heart," »nd^" Gendarmes' duet." .Miss Hel«n Peattie, who is a more advanced pupil, jjuve a very good exposition of Apsfciu'a fantasia on the Last rose of summer." Mi«s Frances Knaraton Showed what diligence and aptitude cm do by seating herself at the piano and without score plsyi g to perfection Stephen Glover's "Retreat Inarch" and Mendelesohu's "Songs without words. As a variation to the piano playi g besides the songs aheady mentioned, Mihb Hall contributed a peasant cone in her usual fluishei manner, and Mrs Scott, -Waihola, also enlivened the afternoon with a sweet song. Amoog the ladle* piesent v f noticed also Mrs Stewart ; Mrs Mackay and Miss Mackay, Waihola f"ark ; Mra Knarston, Taieri Mouth ; Mrs Sinclair, Pliant Vall«y ; Mrs Anderson, Otakia ; Mrs and Mjsb Lamont and Mrs King, Ci'*nley ; Mra and Miss Peattie, Taieri Feny;-Miss Crorubie, Dunedin ; Mrs Bamage, Waihola ; Mi** Scott, Outraui ; Miss Wilson, Bilclntha ; and Misses .Sherburd and Wallace, Taieri Ferry, &c. An acceptable cup of afternoon tea promoted couyersa'ion, which mostly ran on the pleasure dt- rived from the reunion and the excellent playing and singing displayed by Miss Hall's pupils in so short a time.
