ROXBURGH.
September 23.— The Amalgamated may now fairly lie considered our premier hydraulic claim. It is doing well, and is in a good position financially. Matters at the Iliac and Shiuu are, I believe, at a standstill for the time til! fresh arrangement" are come to for the fuithar development of the claim. Gold has been s trunk— no question of that The Roxburgh dredne frtjll continues to be a satisfactory concern. It paid 9.s 6d in dividends for the year. The Ettnck keeps pacing away, and will, I think, yet be a paying speculation. The other dredges are in a satisfuctory position. The Miller's Greek, now the Olago, hsi- received several important irnpiovemoots. The Kdina piy* fahly. I may mention that Mr Law-oii, well known in mining circles, his been appointed manager of ihe < -olden Gate. Plenty of dredi!<»s you will observe on the Glutha ; in fact, weie it not for the dredges I fancy some of your mining engineers would have little to do. I had ncaily forgotten to mention the Island Block, which i« on excellent gold just now. Wkatiier —After weeks of unpleasant, windy weather we have a slight improvement, which is very welcome. One result ba-s been a la'ge turn out. of bicycles. The trees are in blofiiii, and the orchards are a pretty sight. It is to ba hoped that the fruit-growers will have a belter season than they had laat year. Amhskmi-n lS. —There was a really good football match a fortnight ago between the l^cal pUy.-rs and a visiting team from Alexandra. Though our visitors, wore bsatcu they pUyed a eo;.<l game. Our boys shaved exceedingly well— betUr than they have ever d'Hie The next visiting team fioin town will not have things -ill their own way -of that they may be assured. The Saturday following the schools of Coal Creek and Roxburgh tried conclusions, the latter winning easily. A return match, on different lines, is fixed for next SaHwday at Coal Creek. B\U. — There was a bachelors' bill al Miller'a FUt on Friday evening, nt which the iuterest was not confined to the inside performances. Your correspondent there will no doubt send n report. A feature of the year with us is the Foresters' ball, which will be held next Thuisday. A number of daneeis will appear in fancy costumes, which will be a welcome innovation. Deaths —I have to record, with deep regret, the deaths of Mr Granity Peters, h young man of much promis.o, son of Mr Peteia. the well-known manager of the Amalgamated Company ; and of Mis* Mary Harris, second daughter *f an ohl resident of the Teviot. Much sympathy it felt for the bereaved families.
