HINDON.

September 9. — The weather so far this month las been very dry and windy, with occasional frosts at n>ght. The farmers aro all very busy ploughing, tryiDg to nuke up the time they lost during the winter owing tothesavero frosts •we had ; but the needing time here, as a rule, will be late. Cemktery. — The cemetery is being gradually improved in appearance. Some trees have just been planted, and if they prow they will greatly improve the look of the place, but the sovero ■winds wo are having will, if the treas ore not properly staked, almost certainly prevent them rooting. . Entertainment.— One of our usual entertainments was held at the school here last Friday evening, the proceeds of which are to be given to a miner who was injured in this district. The attendance was almost the largest on record here, about 90 people being present. A large number of tickets were sold lo people in Dunedin and elsewhere who could not attend, but who sympathiso with the object the promoters have in view. Mr Duncan M'lX-uald, of Jnvevlochte, took a great iutereat in it, and disposed of a large number of ticket*. Dancing was .kept up vigorously until the early morning, songs being sung during the intervals. 11* M'Kay acted »s M.O. half the time, and Mr Harrison the other iialf. Miss Burneide and Mt*s M'Donald (of Duuedin) sang several duets and solos, and a great sumber of u>ng<3 were sung by the "mankind." Mr Mackenzie, of the N.M. Insutance Company, also helped with sou us and recitations. All did their be*t to please, anil if there was some criticism moat of them t.ok it good-humouredly— as it v/*a meant they should. Fmttino —Mr John Tcdd, who h"i<s bosn here for a number of years, bus just bought a f^rni in the Catlins district, and intends lemoving there presently, and I am sure he takes with him the good wishes of his old neighbours here.
