CECIL RHODES.
Since Robert Ciiv© carved out an empire in ludia for the Brifsh, no man has so distinctly reclaimed from dark races what may be fitly termed an empire as Mr Rhodes. Whether ho may be termed adventurer, buccaneer, filibuster, or Btatf sman is a matter of contention, but the fact remains that by his potent individuality ho is building up a mighty Soafch African Empire to the English ; und, by the practical genius th*t seems to govern all hin actions, he is bringing the hitherto wild lands north and south of the Zambeji into the bosom of civilisation, and the glorious Union Jack now flutters in the breeze under many parallels of latitude in what was only a few yearn ago described by Stanley as Darkest Africa.
The career of Cecil Rhodes ha 3 been one of magnificent good fortune, bub it has baen tha result of pre-eminent abilities, and thosa abilities directed by a happy chance in a groove exactly fitted to the bent of his temperament ta dare in big undertakings. Admiration is applicible to many things. It may be towards an individual character, a. beautiful picture, a beautiful face, a splendid piece of scalptare, a racehorse like Isinglass or Ormonde, or the plumage of a bird of paradise; but the lover of a good smoke will prefer to admire the delicious flavour of the Indian Uhiet Cigarettes, which are now taking the New /sea' laud market by storm.
The Tasmanian Threshing Machice Company paid a dividend of 20 per cent, this year on tha subscribed capital. A fire which started in the bakehouse of J. -£T.
