LAKE WANAKA.
Alhertown, May 13.— The weather continues to be 'very changeable, warm, sunny days, bleak winds, and c<>ld win'ry iaias alternating. Amusesients.-— We have been will supplied with amuneini-nts lately. The evergreen Mr H J. Ly.-ter was lound on a farewell vint and guve one of his drawing. room eutertainments prior to leaving the district and going to "do" the Nor<h Island thoroughly up the west coast and down the east. Mr Lj'ster h.ul crowded houses at Luggate and Hawea, but the oth-r centre' did not show up so well. He pres-itited a complete change of programme and «Hng the latent songs, indu iing "Orom-a-boo," Mes»ra Hobeus' football gem. Ano'her company, Messrs Cidzow andNeill, with Mrs C-iHzov/, who were round with Profe-sor Mason, of electric belt notoriety, also favouied us with a visit, and sang a lar-e var ety of songs, both finely and in paws, to Mrs Cadzow's dcrompiniment. The lad) also contributed a couple of cipi'al selections on the pia.no. Mr Cadzow relited a number of auecdoU'B, some of which had a local application, and coni<cquently created borne fun. They weiv disappointed at tbe snnlliussof the house, but the fact is it was a fairly rvp^e?entative house. Times aie ao hard that many people have to be very S onomi.'.al. If paterfamilias attends an entertainment it is reasonable that he should take his better half, and then it is equally indispensable that he should take the olive branches, aud aa a result perhaps half a week's wages arogone, and severe economy must be pr-ic.ti ed for a week or two afterwards. Narrow Fscape —There was a close hhtve of a fatal iccident at the ford over the Ha we* livtr the other day. Mes rs John llaugh and James Ilaugh, jnn., were cro sing this ford with two dr.iyloads of wheat from their father's farm ou the Forks to the Luggate flour mill. It is necessary to "double bauk" the teams at this crossing, and one Icam was Sifely over, and the two brothers were riding back in order to bring over the remaining diwy, wh°n John Haugh's horse stumble 3 on the rovieh, stony bottom and threw his rider into the water. He was at once washed into the rapid current below the ford. James Haugh, with much presence of mind, went down the frtr-am and plunged in on horseback and brought his biothcr, who was insensible, ashore. When a fatal accident occurs the authorities will arrive at the conclusion that it is time to opon up proper conimunicktion with the outride district. A fatality was in this instance averted by what was almost a miracle. I hesrJ of a somewhat similar •p'"urrenco. A bridal party waft cro>siDga muddy river, nearly waist deep, and flowing swiftly, when the biUe'a biother was thrown off bis hor-.e into the river and at once went out of sight and was drowned, notwithstanding the fast that seveial person* immediately plugged into the river to try and rescue him. Finding search for the budy useless in the meantime, they proceeded to the manse and get married, the cremony being a very mournful one, interrupted as it was by the sobbing and weeping of most of tho3e present.
