LAKE COUNTY.

May 11.— Sqow is com in?, gradually and noi-elefsly creeping on. O.ir mouutaius' winter dresses ext-nd lower and lower down their Hanks with every shower that falls, aud sonvj morning before long we shall find that they each to thei<very feet. Other eitns that winter is a'most upon uk are the notices of our co}ches and steamers goins; back to their winter time-tables and the rumours of our milling companies and parties washing up before KiDg Fro3t issues his interdict. Kkiuous Accident.— A very serions accident happened latt Monday afternoon at Macetown, at a spot known as Smith's Gully, on Anscll's Hill. Thr "c rabbit evs were being conveyed to the scene of their operations in a four-wheeled trap, in th« charge <.f_a driver named Ray. When thecon. veyance wa« going down Amell's Ilill something went wrong with the reins, and the tiorses b<-ein-ning to play up in a very nanow part of the roid, two of the rabbitera jumped put, the trap going over the bank, where there is a clear drop of 50ft. with the driver and the remaining rabbit ron board. The driver, upon landing at the bottom, jumped at once upon his. feet, trying to release the horses— both of which died upon the spo! — and clear the animals aud wreckage off ths rabbi ter, whose name is Mcc, aud wi>o hud tre m'>fortune to fall under the horses and get k ck*d by them. UnfoitunaU'ly befo.'e Pny con'd «'o anything he sw< oned awny, and remained unconscious for some time. As' istauc*, however, was at hand, and Mcc on beii g got out was found to be t'-rrinly mangled, and did not recover confciousne^s until two days after the accident. Bjih sufferers were taken to the' Arrow Ho&prnl, where under the caie of Pr Thompson they are progrt-ssin^ towards rtcovery as rpiedily«s c uld well ba txpecteJ from the seriousness of their injure*. Arrow Hospital Again.— Daylight has been let in on some of the doings of the management of this institution. It will be remembered that for

some time past these letters were much taken up with Arrow Hospital matters— in the opinion of some to such an extent as to be almost monotonous. For a long time past irregularities of all kinds have been hinted at, and f»r the past two years or more there has been an air of seciecy and mystery about the meetiugs of the trns'ees that augured no good. However, much of this state of affairs was nseribei to want of business tact and general intfficieticy on the part of the management. Now the cat is out cf the bug, and we know what was really wrong. At the S.M. Court ! yeetfrday James Healsy, the secretary for the hospital, was charged on seven or eight disUuct counts of appropri iting the funds of the Hospital, the thefts extending overa number of years but all involving only small amounts. It would appear that the secretary was not proof against the temptations that nearly always rankle in an atruoopheie of concealmeut aud darkness, and fell a victim to the temptations placed in his way. As a consequence, the unfortunate man at hist found himself charged a-i above stated. After an all day and most pitient hearing his Worship (Mr Warden Wood) found the accused guilty on a number of the chargrs, but considering that he was a married man, and that others would suffer for his misdeeds, made the sentence as light as possible, impoiing a fine of £'28, or six mouths' imprlsonmeut. The fine was paid. This is another JeFson on the evil effects of underhand at d h de-aud c >rner work. PonrncAf-.-Mr W. Fraser, MH.It. for the Lake, met Mb constituents at Queensfcown and Arrowtown yesterday and to-day, and was arc jrded attentive hearings by large numbers of his consti'uents in both places A good deal of interest was disp'ayerl In the questions and subjects treated by Mr Fraser, and at the end of the nieeiiDgs cordial votes of thanks and confidence were accorded the speaker. For the short time that has elip~ed feinc<s his election our member has »u"ceed«d in estab'ishmg a very strong entente conliule with the electors. This in a raeasiue is no doubt owing to the fact that even before hia election Mr Fiaser was favourably known }n thia electorate, though not a resident in it To this must be added that our member's sterling qualities are calculated to draw the si rings between himself and his constituents (.till closer than they are already. Things political have generally worked pretty smoothly in these parts between electors and repre c eatative— that is, of course, excepting at election times.
