HYDE.
May 13.— The weather continues fine for this season of the year. We have had no frost to speak of yet, and not much rain. • Agricultural.— A good deal of ploughing has teen done, and some fields sown m rye for early Bheep feed. Turnips are very scarce in this locality this year, and the same may be said of chaff and oats. , Otago Central.— The railway works are progressing at a fair rate. The culverts are about completed as far as Ryan's, and most of the cuttings are wtll advanced to the same puce. The tunnel is also getting on very well, but thera are still the bridges to be built. Two of these tore Btarted some time ago, but work on them
was 9fopnecl on account of tho foundations, I believe. When they will be started again no one eeems to know. Trbe-phntinq.— l see that "A?ricola" has foine remarks on tree planting in Central Otago in your last issue. Want of trees is certiinly a great drawb'ck in this part of the country, and anything in the directisn of tree-planting bhould be encour-.ged. Tho rabbit, however, is one of the great foes of young trees in these pirts, aud un-1-88 the ground is securely netted it is almost useless to plant trees. To plaut rows of trees alon« the dividing fences, as " Agricola " recommends, is almost impossible under the circumstances.
