INVERCARGILL NOTES.
The greeu of the Foufchland B-jwling Club —the only me, by the way, in tlufc provincial district— is now thf scent of much activity and not a little Doric fr< m 4 p.m. till 9 p m. on fix days ot the week. On "Wi'di esday, when the whole town enjoya a half holiday, play starts at 2 p.m , and not a few may be s en on Saturday bowlm* the whole day through, aud grumbling at night that " The morn's the sawbatb."
The annual two-ha'.ided four-ball match is now on, and a few games huve been played. M'llwrsck (s) andSebo and Ham (s)and Lepgat are the pnirs most fancied, although the two veterans Btorie (s) and Thomson have put up the " bovss " score, 35.
The club' 6 president is the Mayor of Invercargill (cx-officio). For the last six years he hns been a bowler. Aspiring candidates please take notice.
None have been rrore energetic and successful in beautifying the reserves than Mr Andrew Rae v ide. A strangor visiting the pk ce of ground (5£ acres) io wbich thfi bo«liutf gr< en is situated after an absence of, say, 12 months wonW be surprised to notice the improvement effected in that time.
The meandering Puni, which formerly appeared as if dt sig ed as a receptacle for deid dogs and cat» an 1 stray pi-ce<» of Dresden chm*, (?), vow bids fair to rival the Christchurch river Avon Wi'.hi'i 50 yards of the gre ng te is an artificial lake of small dimensions, in the midst of which is a fountain, not of the Cat gill monument species, but superior to the one in the Triangle. Here black and white swans add variety to the colour and gracefulness to the surroundings.
Inside the green seats have been provided for the ladies and visitors. Th« shrubs aud hedges have been trimmed and the drains aephal'ed. AH this has been done at trifling expense to the c"ub, which is strengthening its fiuaocial position by economy and by an accession of now members.
Four years ago the cub issued 150 debentures of £1 each, bo th&b the cub's overdraft might be paid off and tbe guarantors freed from liability. "Jack" with a few other* gently insinuated that those who took debentures would not likely fee rcucu of their moncv. What is the result ? About £125 ha* been paid off, and it will not b^ loDg ere the club i» five of debt. All this has been done out of an iacome of le*s than £100 per annum, of which lum the caretaker getß £50. Now, "Jack," apoloM'se or [Freely, willingly, and rejoicingly. — Jack.]
Our players nre aijxiomly looking forward to the programme for the forthcoming tournament which was announced some two months ago a« likely fco fake place io the middle of January. I believe the secretary canvassed memhere, with the result that a sufficient number to make four good rinks eignifir-d their intention of going to Dunedin if that date were fixed upon Man, particulaily bowling mau, w a gregarious animal, and you may expect * flook or non^ at all. We trust that the first iourntmeut of the reconstructed ass >cia' ion will be a great success, and anything that the Club can do to bring about that result shall not b° left Dkiveh.
undone.
