THE NEWS IN SYDNEY.— A PROFOUND SENSATION.
Sydney, November 1. Tbe news of the loss of the Wairarapa caused painful scenes in the city. The cames of a number of steerage passengers are unknown, as they had booked by the Rotomahana but went instead by the Wairarapa. The city was profoundly affected by the Wairarapa disaster, and the railway accident of the previous day paled into insignificance. Flags were lowered to half-mast, and most anxious inquiries were made at the office of the U.SS. Company by those who had friends on board. The newspaper offices and the office o£ the New Zealand PreßS Association were besitged. J. C. White, who is mentioned as missing, is 85 years of age, and is father of the Hon. R. H. White, M.L.O. Mrs Waterhou.se is wife of a school inspector in one of the country districts.
Toe local office of the Union Steam Ship Company has received many expressions of sympathy from leading citizens at the loss of the Wairarapa. The Admiral, in a message of sympathy, offered to place H.M.S. Royalist at the services o£ the company.
