SYMPATHY FROM CANTERBURY.
Chkistchurch, November 1.
The news of the wreck of the Wairarapa caused a painful sensation in Christcburch and Lyttelton to-day, and all the news regarding the disaster was eagerly awaited. The cathedral bells to-night raDg a muilled peal.
It is believed that four of those drowned CJ.me from Christ church. The&e were Miss Arkle, Mr Hill (of Wallace and Co., chemists) and bis wife, and Mr Willis (formerly an assistant in the shop of the same firm).
At a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board this afternoon a resolution was unanimoußly carried expressing deep regret at the loss of life occasioned by the wreck, and sympathy with those who kaYfl efflifered bereavemeat thereby.
