October B.— The weather still continues to be fine — in fact too dry for grass and grain crops. The autumn-sown wheat looks well, and is already covering the ground. Most of the farmer* are engaged planting potatoes at present Ihcre is not * large area roiug in tbi< year, farmers going in more for dairy and sheep-farming. I notice on certain farms a plentiful stock of rabbits. Whether it pays to rear them I cannot say. In this connection I hear some talk of the Dunback Rabbit Tinning Factory being shifted to Tokomairiro, at which place it is thought it will pay better. Dairy Factories.— Tho Shag Valley Dairy Factory resumed work on the 2nd inst. with a good supply of milk for this time of the season. The Flag rrwamp and Hampden factories, both of which are owned by our enterprising cheesemaker, Mr John Duncan, jun., started the same day. Mr Duncan has charge of the local factory, while Mr R. Jeffries has that at Flag Swamp, and Mr Graham Scott has take a charge of the new branch at Hampden. Mr Alex. Lindsay takes his place aa.a cadet at Shag Valley. Mr Duncan deserves the greatest credit for the pushing way that he bat started factories in these districts, as they are proving such a blessing to farmers. Siiao River. — A deputation waited on the county council re the pollution of the river from the dairy factory piggeries. No action was taken in the matter. It is straDge that these piggeries should be singled out, when all the sewage from Pahnerston and all the surrounding districts runs into the river.
Service of Sono.— A service of song entitled 1 Reclaimed," was given in aid of the Sunday school funds in the Presbyterian Church on the night of the 28th ult. to a fair audience. The manner in which, the choir acquitted themselves showed careful practice, and Mr Mathcson is to be congratulated on the success of the piece. Mr Clarke gave the connecting readings very successfully. Miss Cook presided with ability at the harmonium, lent for the occasion— an innovation which helped greatly in assuring the success of the meeting.
