October B.— A very successful trial of Meisrg J. and J. Gait's (of Mataura) drain plough was held in Messrs Wilton and s'cott's paddock on Thursday, 4th inst. A large number of farmers were present from Otakia, Henley, Taieri Beach, Clarendon, Milburn, <fee. Owing to the'very dry weather, which is still continuing, the ground was extremely hard; but the plough worked easily in spite of this, with eight average farm horses belonging to several different owners, who lent them for the occasion. Drains were cut from a depth of lCin to 22in, and wherever water waa touched it ran freely, and all present expressed great approval of the work done. The plough remains in the district, and most likely more ploughs will be sold. As our local medico, who was also a spectator, remarked : "It is as simple as standing an egg on its apex— when you see it done." With two men and eight horses from eight to ten miles of drains can be cut in a day. Its price also being so moderate, and the land receiving so much benefit from draining, this plough ought to have a place on nearly all farms of any s'ze.

Ecclesiastical.— The Rev. George Hall arrived back on Saturday evening, and was in his accustomed place at Waihola church on Sunday. The beautiful day combined with the return of the pastor resulted in a large congregation assembling. Mr Hall looks and feels very much better for his trip, and is glad to get back to New Zealand again. A soiree will be held in the church on the 17th inst. to formally welcome him back, when we are sure to get a very interesting account of his travels.
