October 9. — The weather continues phenomjnally fine, and grass, crops, *c. are looking their best, and at present promise a good return to the farmer.

Cottage Hospital.— The proposal to establish a cottage hospital does not seem to take so well with the residents of Kaitangata as our borough councillors and medical men expected, and so far as can be judged at present, matters in connection with it are at a standstill. Some little time ago a public meeting was held to discuss the subject, and the mayor, who has spent a great deal of time and trouble over the proposal, promised to address the ratepayers ; but when the time came, only his Worship, one councillor, and about 12 others, put in an appearance, so that it was decided to postpone action in the meantime. A Change.— At the commencement of this month we had again a change of doctors in connection with the Kiitangata Coal Company Society, Dr Thomson having left here to take up the position of resident surgeon at the Arrow Hospital, and his place being taken by Dr Little, who is, I believe, an old Dunedin boy. lhat Dr Thomson will be missed in our town is a certainty,

as he was a leading member of the football, cricket, lawn teonis, and bowling clubs, and also a prominent member of everything organised for the benefit of the community at large. We are also about to lo3e another well-known citizen in the person of Mr F. M'Govern, proprietor for the past 11 years of the Club Hotel, he having sold out at a very satisfactory figure to Mr Smith (late head porter at the Dunedin railwuv shition). Mr M'Gov*-rn's leaving KaiuaiigaU wili very probably pause a vacancy in the borough council, a position he was elected to at the general election of coun-illors some three or four weeks ago. Mr and Mrs M'Govern will be very much missed from their accustomed place, and the people of Kaitangata, I am sure, wish them success wherever they settle and in whatever business they may engage. Borough Council.— lt is rumoured that another of our "City Fathers" proposes resigning, owing to his inability to find time to attend to the duties of his office. Should this prove true, the defeated candidates of two or three weeks ago may yet have an opportunity of satisfying their ambition. Inquest.— An inquest was held to-day before Mr w. H. Mackenzie, acting coroner, and a jury of six on the body of a farmer named John Biby, who died very suddenly yesterday morning. A verdict of ' Death from tetanus " waa returned.
