TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

An ordinary meeting of the Taieri 'County Council, held on .Friday, was attended by Mr Graham (chairman), Crs Chisholm, Snow, Roberts, < Samson, .Andrew, *nd Nichol.

inspector's report.

Tbe Inßpeokor of Works reported that the \Silverstrcam ford at the Wingatui road had been in a .very bad condition for jsome time back, the

water having cat out the west approach to a ■depth of 3ft. He had a new approach made with gars* and gravel, .and 'had to remove 'the rsteppin£ stones, and .they could .not be kept in -position on .account of the loose gravel bod. As something was wanted for foot passengers to get over the stream Aty, ha would sujtgest a foot bridge, which only cost about £5. Some cix months-agon* called Mr Metrdo's attention to •■tie dangerous state of -theToad«t his gravel pit, MiddlemaTch. -A vny -temporary fence had. been < •erected *ince then, 'but as "the ,pit was now full of ' water, which was wasting away the roadline, the fence was not sufficient lor the public-safety, air Grade's road at Saddle Sill was very .narrow, and was always in a bad condition in "winter. Abodt 150 yaTds of metal Tyere required ; for the ro*d. The *tone mw convenient- < 'to the road, .and if the settlers would -do | the carting the cost .of thewoi-k would only.be i •.about jEIC .The surfacemen couW widen and j form the narrow parts leading to Mi: ; Shrinks joad at TJrockvillerequired a culvert, for ■ -which "Mr Swing would provide the *tone*. | isibout 100 yards of metal were also wanted to connect and i>itch the old metal. The xost .would be small, as the stone was near at hand and could be obtained from Mr Ewing free of cost. H'Meikcm's road had a number of small slips which would have to be -removed. The slip on Fernhill road was still moving, but so far there was no danger to traffic. A large subsidence had taken place on McLaren's -hill, Otakia riding.; but steps-had .been taken to taakethe road passable. In company with Mr Ohisholm, he visited the road which leads from Millar' 3 road to OtaktaMaucgatua road. The cost of forming by band labour would be 10s per chain, but if the settlers supplied horses to work the grader — say three months after this— the only expense would be the water openings. About 200 yards of metal would be required on the road leading up Flagstaff from the Roslyn boundary. A -settler had offered to supply it cheap during the summer ; and he (the inspector) would suggest that his offer be accepted in the event of the metal being allowed. There "was something wrong with the fencing of the Centre road fences, OutxtLtn riding. Some of the settlers had evidently taken part of the road into their paddocks. The road, he believed, ought to be one chain .in width ■from Cuddies factory to the Henley-Berwick road ; but ha founcl that some of it was. only S3ft wide, other parts being 48ft. As part of the road was going to be -formed, it was necessary to have the fences put in the right place so as to avoid trouble in the future.— lt was r«olved thatafootbridge across the Silverstream at Wingatui ford be constructed, as recommended ; that the inspector ba authorised to put four willow crates in the Taieri river above Oottesbrook bridge to nrotect the council's road ; that Mr Meade be notified to erect a sufficient fence round his gravel pit at Middlemarch ; that £12 be expended in providing metal for Gracie'a road ; that the inspector arrange "for -the supplyof 150 yards of metal on Ewing's road, BrockviUe ; that an extra rorfacemsn .be employed for, *ay 10 days in removing dip on M'Meikan s road, Kaifcomi ridine4 that the council amend £25 in watWLftPewn* 8 » draitt

road, and that if the settlers agree to* do the horse work required for the grader the formation also be proceeded with ; tfcat the parties encroaching on the Centre road, Outram Tiding, be, notified to remove their fences ou to the proper line ; that the inspector report to the council at next meeting as to what action had been taken to clear the country roads of gorse ; and that the inspector make a report as to how £20 can be expended in gravelling the road to Mason's section out of "thirds" and "fourths" revenue.
