OBITUARY.

George DrydeD, another old identity, who was well known as a storekeeper in Russell street, passed away on Saturday, 29th ult., atrthe advanced age of 70. Some time-ago he suffered from cancer, and on the ,27th ol May lasb •underwent a serious operation ior the removal of the disease, the upper jaw being taken out and replaced. The operation /was inccesßfnl ; "but the disease subsequently returned, and to it Mr Dryden eventually succumbed. The arrived in the colony in 1858, and went through the "various ups and downs o{ colonial life. At one time— in the good die Gabriel's Gully days— he had several teams on .■the road between Dunedin and ihe diggings, but afterwards .'followed ithe occupations of a road contractor and a farmer, finally becoming a storekeeper. He was the first one stuck -op i>y the notorious Garrett at Maungatua, through whose hands he managed top«Bs withoutr bslrjp robbed, although he had gold to the value of about £3000 concealed in <fci« horses' collars. One side of Arthur street, between Duncan ■and Russell streets, was built byliim, and be owned the first store and hotel in that locality.
