The debate on Senator Sherman's amendment to impose a 40 per cent, duty on wool is proceeding.
Senator Harris, Democratic leader in the United States Senate, expects that a compromise will be agreed to under which raw wool will be admitted free.
June 15.
The Senate, by 37 to 29, rejected a motion to restore the M'Kinley rate on wool.
Other proposals with regard to the wool duty are before the Senate, and the debate continnes.
The Senate, by a majority of two votes, rejected the amendment fixing the tariff rates at less than half thoee imposed by the M'Kinley tariff.
June 17.
In the Senate an amendment to place manufactures wholly or partly composed of wool on the free list was rejected, only three Senators voting in its favour. Tbe Senate has now completed the schedule dealing with woollen goods in the new tariff. Certain modifications to suit tbe wishes of the Republicans were adopted, but the question of the admission of raw wool into the States free has not yet been voted on. The question of its being included in the free* list will be discussed later on.
The Senate's refusal on Friday last to put a duty on raw wool is generally regarded as an indication that it will remain on tbe free list.
June 18. The new schedule rates of duty on woollen goods comes into operation in January.
