- First Day— Wednesday. The coursing season for 1894- was opened yesterday, when the Dunedin Plumpton coursing meeting for May, held under the management of the Dunedin Jo ikey Club, was commenced on the Forbury course. The weather was fine, excepting that a chilly breeze was blowing, and there was a fair attendance. The F.rst Challenge Stakes, which forms the principal event at the meeting, is the most important coursing stake which has been offered in the colony, and closed with 120 dogs, including a number from Victoria and others from all parts of New Zealand. The first round of this stake was completed yesterday, when some_ capital coursing was witnessed, the dogs which displayed best form being," perhap3, Boomerang, Sweetmeat, Lizzie Godfrey, Maltstress, Witchlock, Nitrate King, Sydeßham, Stormy Petrel, and Verdi. The decisions of Mr W. MAuley, who filled the responsible position of judge, gave general satistaction during the day, and Mr W. Henderson, in his old post of slipper, performed his., duties satisfactorily. The general arrangements were superintended by a body of stewards, comprising Messrs P. Miller, W. H. Taggart, G. Dowse, J. Fleming, L. Maclean, H. Gourley, J. Blaney, W. Wood, W. Mills, and R. Allen, Mesßrs Taggarb and Dowse acting as slip steward's, while the secretarial work was attended to by Mr H. L. James. Lancashire Lad (3 to 1 on, offered) raced away from Wanderer, and' did nearly all the work. King Bruce and Jack Tar were slipped to a very weak hare. King Bruce led up by a length, but, overrunning, let Jack Tar in for two or three turns, after which the fawn turned and killed. Lucia led White Squall a length, and had slightly the best of the exchanges. Kaputiki (3 to 2 agst) led Blackmount by 10 lengths, and had the best of the exchanges in a course in which there was very little work done. Commodore (3 to 2 agst) had a slight advantage in pace, and did the scoring in the early part of the course ; a lot of give-and-take work followed, and then Auld Toon had a longish innings, but Commodore had something in hand when the hare got away. Brilliant Boy (2 to 1 on) led up by half a dozen lengths from Stormlock, and rolled over as he snapped at the hare, but the red dog made no use of his opportunity, and Brilliant Boy killed as soon as he got on his feet again. The hare when slipped for the next course made for the direction of the tramway track, and, swerving in its way, favoured Davitt, but Starry Night (2 to 1 on) was the faster, and, pinning the hare against the fence, killed. Beadonwell (2 to 1 agst) was the fastest away, but Philosopher gradually overtook and forged past him, leading up by less than a length ; and the latter had the best of the exchanges, Beadonwell showing an inclination to stand off. Cardigan (2 to 1 on) led Midge four or five lengths and did all the scoring in the early part of the course, but the slut subsequently got in for a good winnings, without, however, scoring enough to beat Cardigan. An undecided was run between Boomerang (2 to 1 on) and Autumn Rose, the former leading up and turning, and the latter then getting in and meritoriously killing. On their being slipped the second time Autumn Rose showed in front, but Boomerang (3 to 1 on), showing splendid speed, galloped past her, obtained a strong lead, and scarcely gave the slut a show in a fairly long course. Ravenswing (2 to 1 on) was leading up when she came a cropper, turning three somersaults, and Belfry was thus let in ; on Ravenswing recovering himself he collided with his opponent, and was again sent to earth, and a brief course was concluded by Belfry killing. Christmas Rose led up by two lengths from Beaconsfield (2 to 1 on), and had all the best of the exchanges. Dewy Shamrock (evens on) led Little Maid two lengths and scored everything, until Little Maid, dashing in, cleverly killed. The betting was even on the next course, in which Tickle got out of the slips with some lengths' advantage, and. Eagle Eye being apparently unsighted, established a strong lead, but when the fawn caught sight of the hare he gathered speed at once and caught up on the slut ; a rare tussle resulted in Tickle securing the turn, and the other points were about equally divided. The hare turned and favoured Blackhawk (3 to 2 on) who, after colliding with Sailor Jack, killed. Mere's to 'Ec (3 to 2 on) led First Water by a few lengths and did nearly all the work, First Water standing off most of the way. Sweetmeat (2 to 1 on) raced away from Wheel o' Fortune, leading up by 10 lengths, and gave the latter no chance at all in a long course. King Death (3 to 2 on), after a good tussle with The Ostrich, seemed to get the first turn ; but there was not much in it either way, and in the subsequent work the slut scored for the greater amount of points. Miss Amy (3 to 2 agst) looked like leading up, but in the last few lengths Gypsan shot ahead and the latter scored nearly everything. Stormy Day (3 to 2 on) was quickest out of the slips, but Denyer gradually forged up alongside her, and after an exciting struggle the latter turned, and retaining possession won easily. Charlie (3 to 2 agst) led Razzle .Dazzle four lengths and scored nearly, if not quite, everything in a course in which neither showed good form. Flonie (evens on) led Royal Scone by a couple of lengths and was not only the faster but also the better woiker, the Victorian dog being beaten almost pointless. A close run up between Merchant (3 to 2 agst) and Sweetwater looked like ending in the latter's favour, but Merchant did the rest of the work and gained the verdict in a short course. Ledgerkeeper (2 to 1 agst) led Boadicea three lengths and turned, gave the slut the go-by once, if not twice, and, retaining possession, ran up a score which Boadicea, when she got in. was unable to equalise before Ledgerkeeper killed. Mars (2 to 1 on) beat Nettle by nine or ten lengths in the run up, and had the beat of the course throughout. Pine Hut (3 to 1 on) led Rawei a couple of lengths and won all the way. Marco (evens on) led up by three lengths and scoring everything in the early stages of the course had a lot to Epare when the escapes were reached. Lizzie Godfrey (2 to 1 on) was faster than Pakeha, and, working closely and cleverly, won with a g jod deal in hand. Though Prince Charlie (3 to 2 on) exhibited a capital turn of speed, Colonel was by a couple of lengths the first to the hare, and the black dog drove to cover. Vengeance (evens on) led the Czar by about a length, turned, and killed. Douglas (2 to 1 on) had a substantial advantage in the run up, and had generally the best of the course, though Chance It put in some good work in front of the escapes. Snowdonia (evens on) led Isa by two lengths and scored nearly everything, the black slut only getting in once. Mechanic (2 to 1 on) was much faster than The Idler, and beat nun pointless. Red Jack (3 to 2 agst) was in the lead when the hare swerved towards Redeemer, and gave the latter a couple of turni before it got away. Taiaui (3 to 2 on) led up from Cpomasßle, turned, wrenched, and. killed, Royal May (8 tp 1 on) not only bad the pace of Election, but also gbowed faQtiqU a pmart worker, and. the only

score the latter got was secured when the favourite fell. Penitent led Dean Swift (2 to 1 on), who did not score, while the former turned, wrenched, and flecked the hare, the favourite completing the killing operation Maltstre&s (4 to 1 on) led up by three lengths and turned about a dozen times and wrenched fully a score of times in a gruelling course iv which Windsor Sovereign only scored a few wrenches. Shylock (5 to 2 on) and Witchlock ran an undecided— a verdict for which the judge was cheered— the former leading by five lengths and turning twice, after which the slut, getting in, drove splendidly to cover, keeping cleverly on the hare. In the deciding trial, there was very little to choose between the pair, butjWitchlock again kept on the hare well, and showed a vast superiority in her working. Maori Boy ran past My Jack (2 to 1 on), led him three lengths, and had slightly the best of the exchanges. Carnage (6 to 5 on) and Absconder were well matched in point of speed, the latter getting a first turn, as it appeared, solely though the former steadying himself, and Carnage had much the best of the subsequent work. Bequeath (2 to 1 on) led up by two lengths, and driving cleverly to cover, only allowed Minton a single turn. Medallion (2 to 1 on) led Snowflake two lengths to the turn ; the slut then flecked the bare, sending some of its fur flying, but Medallion, getting in again, scored all the remaining points. Young King (2 to 1 agst), favoured by the hare, led up, turned, and killed, Ringdove not scoring. Prefix (3 to 1 on) had the advantage in pace and led up by three lengths, but then running wide let Brown Eyes in for a turn, after which Prefix got another turn before the hare escaped. Norma (2 to 1 on) raced away from Snowdon, leading up by 10 lengths, and thereafter did most of the work, Snowdon only scoring three wrenches. Nitrate King (2 to 1 on) and Nightlock ran an undecided, the former leading up without turning, and the latter then picking up and killing. In the deciding trial Nitrate King led up and scored neatly everything, working cleverly. Sydenham (2 to I on) and Bit of Fashion were slipped to a rather weak hare, to which the former led up, after which there was some very smart give and take work in a small patch of ground, both dogs dancing about after the hare, and finally a kill to Sydenham terminated the trial. Stormy Petrel (3 to 1 on) led up by eight or nine lengths to a dodgy hare, which gave the dogs a gruelling trial, In which both worked well and scored about evenly. Faugh-a-Ballagh led Jane (2 to 1 on) in a long slip, and had the best of the exchanges. Strathmore (2 to 1 on) led up from Deerfoot 11, and beat the latter pointless or practically so. Clement's Tonic (3 to 1 on) led Lottie several lengths, and did nearly all the work. Brumie (2 to 1 on) led up from Clyto, and had much the best of the exchanges. Fuguist (3 to 2 on) ran clean away from Admiral, whom he led by fully a dozen lengths, and this, as it turned out, gave him the course, for the black dog had much the best of the work, of which, however, there was not enough to let him win. The Friar (5 to 2 agst) led Royal Thorn a couple of lengths, and made an exhibition of the Victorian dog, who stood off while the former ran up a score. Wildboy (5 to 2 agst) led Wild Rose II a couple of lengths and turned, and Wild Rose then getting iv was working nicely when, too soon for her chance of winning, a kill concluded the course. Verdi and Lord Zetland, evens being betted, were given a short slip ; the pair had a close race to the hare, aEtd ftn exciting and gruelling course saw both of them work well, the Australian dog gaining a slight advantage. Master George (2 to 1 on) led up front Ettie May, and by a kill terminated a give and take course, in which honours were fairly even. Foxtail (2 to 1 agst) led up, wrenched, and killed. Royal Tar (3 to 2 agst) was led by Unfortunate by a length, and, after the turn, the former killed. The first course to-day will start at 11 a.m.
