NEW PROFESSORS AT AUCKLAND.
Auckland, February 19.
The Agent-general recommends Mr Johnston, sixth wrangler for 1882, as professor of mathematics for the Auckland University. Me Tubb.«, assistant to Professor Tucker, Melbourne University, has accepted the post of classical professor at the Auckland University, and has been formally appointed. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Auckland, February 19. Of the new professors of the Auckland University, Mr W. R. Johnston, mathematical professor, was formerly fellow at St. John's, Cambridge, and senior wrangler of the mathematical Tripos in 1882. Mr Charles W. Egerton, appointed to the English chair, took his B.A. degree in 1885, and his M.A. in 1889. Mr Tubbs took his degree at Oxford in 1887, being first-class in classic?. He took a Craven fellowship in 1888 of the value of £200 por annum, which required him to spend eight; months in each year studying abroad, and in 1890 he was Arnold prizeman (the value being' £42) with an historical essay on ancient and modern history. These app>intmenti complete the university professorial staff, and effectually dispose of the prediction made in certain quarters that a difficulty would be experienced in filling the vaoineies. Each of the professors appointed is evidently a man of high standing in hi 3 profession, and the university is to be congratulated on the successful issue of the negotiations.
